Only nine fillies have won one of the races currently recognized as classic events in the United States, most of them before the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont were formally recognized as America's "Triple Crown."
Beginning with the inaugural Belmont in 1867, which was won by Ruthless, Flocarline (1903 Preakness), Tanya (1905
Belmont), Whimsical (1906 Preakness), Regret (1915 Kentucky Derby), Rhine Maiden (1915 Preakness), Nellie Morse (1924 Preakness), Genuine Risk (1980 Kentucky Derby) and Winning Colors (1988 Kentucky Derby) followed suit. |
